Most pet owners are likely to live in free-standing dwellings, however it is estimated by Animal Medicines Australia research that 39% of people who live in apartments or units are still likely to own a pet. A US study found similar results with 25-30% of apartment dwellers owning pets. These findings are particularly relevant in LGAs where housing is shifting rapidly from free-standing dwellings to medium and high-density housing. This is going to place additional challenges on public open space, particularly in areas where developers are already actively targeting pet owners and incorporating facilities for pets.
Is proactive dialogue needed between LGAs and developers to address and minimise the likely challenges for local government and optimise outcomes for LGAs and pet owners alike?
